About this album

This 1974 outing finds Gordon Lightfoot at his peak, seamlessly matching earthy folk-rock to supple pop arrangements. The Canadian songsmith's pen is at its sharpest here; in addition to its earworm chorus and irresistible, bluesy groove, "Sundown" is as perfect a portrait of romantic paranoia as has ever been sung. "Circle of Steel" poignantly juxtaposes a comely folk melody with an unblinking gaze at societal ills. Lightfoot's invitingly oaky baritone could make his grocery list sound captivating, but he's working with top-shelf tunes here.
