About this album
Barenboim, a lifelong Brucknerian, ventures to conduct his third complete cycle of the composer’s symphonies. Barenboim rounds off some of Bruckner’s brassy snarl, and the result is a lush and pleasing sound from the Staatskapelle Berlin players. The comparative mellowness helps bring out melodic aspects of the grander, later symphonies that are often glossed over in the push for boldness. The Scherzo in No. 8 is particularly gorgeous; other highlights include a relatively brisk No. 2, and a Ninth that growls and broods—like it should.
