About this album
On the pan-Latin-swaggering, four-disc compilation El Barrio, the legendary imprint Fania Records documents the ’70s New York City salsa boom that intersected with other American art forms. Rooted in street-style culture and immigrant party scenes, songs like “Together” by boogaloo bandleader Ray Barretto juggle acrobatic Afro-Cuban rhythms with fearless brass; on the lowrider funk of “La Vida,” soul master Ralfi Pagan delivers slinky vocals over deep, catchy basslines. Then there’s Tito Puente; he goes the disco route with “Wata Wasuri,” which whips into a thrilling xylophone frenzy.
