About this album
The 45 hit singles, rarities, and concert jams on this sprawling anthology both reaffirm the group’s Southern rock legacy and look beyond it. Where the union of Muscle Shoals soul and roadhouse riffs powering “Sweet Home Alabama” is quintessential Skynyrd, the smoking live rendition of “Crossroads” reveals a deep affection for eardrum-punishing British blues. Perhaps the most revealing cut is an early demo of “Free Bird” that lacks the official version’s hard rock heft, instead wrapping it in dreamy folk rock vibes.
