About this album
Chan Marshall must have been pleased with the results of her first all-covers album, because she returns to the well of other songwriters on her eighth album, crafting yet another soulful collection of bruised, heartbroken ballads. First up is a bluesy, menacing reimagining of Liza Minnelli’s cheery theme from New York, New York, while her take on Hank Williams’ “Ramblin’ Man” rewrites the lyrics from a female perspective, as Marshall sighs atop a ghostly slide-guitar backdrop.
