About this album
After a six-year period during which Cat Power produced no original material, Sun might sound like the work of a recluse. Far from it: Her ninth album is an iridescent montage of lo-fi pop majesty—a comeback that would sound celebratory, if Chan Marshall weren’t as gloomily captivating as ever. “Ruin” bounces along on a delightfully dinky keyboard riff, while the piano groove of “Manhattan” seems to build and build while always keeping its release just beneath the surface.
