Rautavaara & Martinů: Piano Concertos No. 3

This remarkable recording features two concertos by composers who stylistically ploughed their own furrow. Finnish composer Rautavaara’s Piano Concerto No. 3 from 1998 is, despite its age, a post-Romantic work at heart, full of coruscating textures, dramatic flourishes, and eerie soundworlds. In a similar way, Martinů’s own Third Piano Concerto, from 50 years earlier, couples intense lyricism with joyful bursts of modernism. Pianist Olli Mustonen brings customary sensitivity to both works while conductor Dalia Stasevska ekes out every detail from these astonishing scores.
