About this album
Family Tree is a product of intense need. Drake’s three albums of spectral, early-‘70s chamber folk left fans searching out lost home recordings, and these are collected here. There are scratchy old blues masters (“My Baby’s So Sweet”), contemporary folk-blues (“Been Smokin’ Too Long”), and a work-in-progress piano version of “Way to Blue.” Most fascinating are the recordings of Nick’s mother, Molly Drake, singing her own songs (“Poor Mum,” “Do You Ever Remember?”), foreshadowing her son’s mournful sophistication with eerie precision.
