About this album
Tsu Surf has been waiting for this day. After the legendary battle rapper from Newark was sentenced to five years in prison on federal RICO charges back in 2023, he was paroled in April of 2026. REAL INSIDE COLD OUTSIDE, his first release since his time behind bars, is both a celebration of and a reckoning with the ways incarceration changed him.
After the opener, “Rico Intro,” serves as a tidy recap for anyone unaware of where Surf had been from 2023 to the middle of 2026, he moves into “Real Inside,” an emotional and charged cut built around a stirring piano melody and a delivery from Tsu that’s almost desperate in its passion. Having once lost his freedom, it’s as if the MC isn’t sure when he’ll get the chance to rap again.
Elsewhere, though, he sounds invigorated and ready to take back his place in rap’s hierarchy, like when he goes bar for bar with G Herbo on “No Paperwork” or channels effortless swagger on “Mhmmm.”
Our Favourite Beat: The soulful, choir-sampling “Gang Die.”
