About this album
Rather than cash in on MTV success, R.E.M. coaxed its newfound listenership into the gently ominous tones of 1992’s Automatic For the People. From the gentle dirge of “Drive” to the hymn-like “Nightswimming”, the mostly acoustic and frequently drumless album is at once deeply sorrowful and lovingly comforting. With the instrumental austerity of a folk song and the disarming simplicity of an Otis Redding ballad, “Everybody Hurts” shows the band at its most vulnerable, while “Man on the Moon” rewards us with a singularly dreamy rush of pop pleasure.
