About this album
Despite his debaucherous legacy, Rick James wasn't all sex, drugs and more sex and drugs: his fifth album, Street Songs, contains his two most notorious floor-fillers (the rubbery, lascivious "Super Freak" and "Give It to Me Baby") but also very real social awareness. Via James' streetwise eye and inimitable speak-sing vocals, "Ghetto Life" trips back in time to his troubled youth in New York state, while "Mr. Policeman" calls out officers’ brutality via James' aggrieved vocals and Stevie Wonder's bluesy harmonica.
