Thanks to founder Andre Harrell and, later, a young Sean “Puffy” Combs, Uptown Records became one of the most influential labels in hip-hop and R&B by pioneering the fusion of the two genres. Heavy D & The Boyz brought about a suave, tuneful new approach to rap, while Jodeci and Mary J. Blige injected streetwise attitude into R&B.
