В середине 80-х тяжелой сценой еще владели по-юношески нежные пауэр- и спид-метал с их мелодичностью, но в системе назрел потенциал для перемен. Одна из малоизвестных глэм-групп внезапно начала играть музыку с подлинной агрессией, где ярость стала творческим инструментом. Таким образом, именно с Pantera началось взросление метала как жанра: на смену имитации пришла самобытность.
