Sevendust aren't just one of nu-metal's heaviest acts; they're also one of its most melodic. Their most potent cuts sport a seamless integration of jagged, low-end riffs and the rich, emotive vocals of Lajon Witherspoon. On early singles like 1999's “Waffle” and “Denial”, the singer barks, grunts, pleads and croons as his bandmates throttle ears with grooves caked in alienation. As they've aged, the group have successfully ratcheted up their intensity: “Decay”, from 2013's Black Out the Sun, draws in bruising, metalcore-style breakdowns and frenetic hard rock licks.
