Radio Birdman: Influences

Punk was a feeling without a name when Radio Birdman first electrified Sydney's inner city in the mid-'70s. Guitarist Deniz Tek brought his Stooges and MC5 records from his hometown of Detroit. They mined the Blue Öyster Cult songbook for their debut album's title. Their raw garage ethos drew on kindred spirits, from The Kinks and The Stones to early Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls. And they wove in a thread of psychedelic intensity from the 13th Floor Elevators and homegrown heroes The Master's Apprentices. It was all too much, too soon for the fledgling Aussie underground, and the original Birdman dispersed to infiltrate future decades in various permutations.
