Inspired by indie folk's campfire simplicity, Northern Ireland's Rend Collective specialize in communal worship that explodes with ecstatic banjos, acoustic guitars, and handclaps. On 2014's “My Lighthouse,” archetypal Christian imagery is woven into the lyrics, which are bellowed out with a raw religious fervor. Spontaneity comes out in the improvised “Rescuer (Good News),” its loose, piano-banging beat surrounded by background chatter. Their casual character and openness extend to their themes as well, with the sing-along “Live Alive” eschewing theological strictness for an uplifting universal spirituality.
