About this playlist

In the early and mid-'80s, R.E.M. had a cult following and huge success at college radio. After their '87 album Document catapulted them into the mainstream, they left their indie I.R.S. Records for the giant Warner Bros. This playlist showcases those indie years, and it's easy to hear how their jangly mix of power-pop and art-rock influenced greats like Radiohead, Nirvana, and others.
