This swift, smooth Havana-born saxophonist, who defected to the States in 1981, has mixed jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, classical music, and pan-American styles throughout his career. D'Rivera flies through the 1917 Brazilian tune (and bebop standard) "Tico Tico." "Portraits of Cuba" sketches various regions of his homeland through their rhythmic signatures, while his even more comprehensive "Panamericana Suite" blends reggae, bossa nova, and cha-cha-cha with solos by his opera-soprano spouse, Brenda Feliciano.
