2Pac is one of hip-hop's greatest songwriters. A rare genius, he was adept at sneaking socially conscious songs into commercial templates. Or was it the other way around? Critics lazily pegged him as a gangsta rapper, but his catalogue betrays a softer side that far outweighs his bristly edges.
